The long anticipated rematch of Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen 2 finally took place on July 8, 2012 in Las Vegas, NV.
The main event was a highly anticipated rematch between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, which Silva won via second-round TKO to retain his middleweight title.
The win didn’t come easy for Silva, who was dominated in the first round. Sonnen started quickly, taking the champion to the mat. He then pounded Silva with punches and elbows.
In the second round, however, it was all Silva. He stuffed Sonnen’s takedown attempts and landed a knee to the chest as the challenger was on the canvas after missing with a spinning backfist. Silva then hit Sonnen with several hard punches that forced referee Yves Lavigne to wave the fight off at the 1:55 mark.
Originally, the Silva-Sonnen rematch was scheduled to take place at UFC 147 in Rio de Janeiro, but scheduling conflicts with that event forced the organizers to move the fight to UFC 148.
The first fight between Silva and Sonnen at UFC 117 was a very close figh, when Sonnen was credited with beating Silva in each of the first four rounds before succumbing to a triangle choke in the fifth round.
