“Facts and information on the Brazilian Flag – Flag of Brazil”
The flag of Brazil is one of the most unique and recognized flags in the world. Brazilians love their flag and are passionate about it. The emblem and colors of the Brazil flag hold great significance and convey the history, spirit and essence of the Brazilian people’s past and present.
The national flag of Brazil is green with a large yellow diamond in the center enclosing a blue globe with 27 white stars (one star for each state and the Federal District) and the globe has a white band with the motto ORDEM E PROGRESSO (Order and Progress).
There is no clear definition of what the green and yellow colors of the flag mean today. When Brazil declared its independence from Portugal in 1821 and became the Empire of Brazil, a new flag was adopted for the Empire and the green and yellow represented the royal family of Pedro I and his consort Empress Maria Leopoldina, who were the first rulers of the Empire of Brazil.
The modern flag of Brazil was adopted in 1889 and over time the people of Brazil had generally accepted that the green on the flag stands for Brazil’s fertile lands and Amazon Rainforests. And the large yellow diamond is symbolic of Brazil’s wealth in gold and the country’s great mineral richness.
The blue globe with the stars depicts the night sky over Rio de Janeiro on November 15, 1889, with each star representing a specific state. Originally the flag consisted of 21 stars, and now there are 27, with each star representing a Brazilian state and the Federal District. The stars form different constellations that can be seen in Brazil.
The flag of Brazil has gone through different design and color changes throughout its history. See below for a list of these flags.
Colonial Brazil (1500-1816)
There was a number of different flags used throughout the colonial times in Brazil and since Brazil was just a territory of Portugal during this time, it never had an official flag. When the Portuguese came to this country, they typically flew their own Kingdom of Portugal flag. During this era, the flag that was most widely used consisted of a white background with a golden armillary sphere. This flag unofficial became the ensign of Brazil for a while.
Kingdom of Brazil (1816-1821)
In 1815, Brazil was recognized as a kingdom, which was part of the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and Algarves during this era. The Kingdom of Brazil flag was composed of a gold armillary sphere on a blue field.
Empire of Brazil (1822-1889)
After Brazil’s Independence from Portugal and with the coronation of Pedro I as the first ruler of the Empire of Brazil, a new flag was created. The new flag featured the imperial coat of arms within a yellow rhombus, on a green field. The green and yellow colors represented the royal houses of Pedro I and his consort Empress Maria Leopoldina.
Republic of Brazil (1889-present)
After Brazil was proclaimed a Republic in 1889, the current Brazil flag design was officially adopted, which featured 21 white stars. On May 12, 1992, the Brazilian flag was slightly modified with the addition of 6 new stars to the blue globe, which represented the newly created states and also a slight change in the stars’ positions was made to match the astronomical coordinates correctly.
