Saturday’s main event ended just 64 seconds into the fight when referee John McCarthy stepped in to halt the ground-and-pound attack by Dos Santos after he knocked down Velasquez with an overhand right. Velasquez said he remained aware of his surroundings as he fell to the mat, but his body would not react.

The fight was aired live & free on national TV across the United States on Fox and was the first time a UFC bout aired live on a prime network TV channel. Most UFC fights are aired on cable TV or are pay-per-view fights.

The fight was also aired live on Brazil’s largest TV network, Globo. An estimated 60 million viewers in Brazil watched Saturday’s bout.

Brazilians now hold three of UFC’s seven belts, including middleweight champion Anderson Silva and featherweight champ Jose Aldo.

Brazil is basically the birthplace of MMA, which began with the Gracie family. The UFC President Dana White said he considers Brazil the best market on a per-capita basis for the UFC. “We’re going to be doing a lot of stuff in Brazil. … It’s crazy down there,” said White.

The UFC will be in Brazil for UFC 142 that will take place on January 14, 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that features Brazilian ex-champion Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson and many other Brazilian fighters in other bouts.
