Rio de Janeiro occupies one of the most spectacular settings of any city in the world, sitting on Brazil’s Atlantic coast with white-sand beaches and lush green mountains that offer spectacular views, with such beauty no wonder the city has been nicknamed the “Marvelous City.”

Rio is known for its beaches, carnival, nightlife and its breathtaking landscape. It has many iconic sights which include Pao de Acucar (Sugar Loaf Mountain), the Christ the Redeemer statue that sits on top of Corcovado mountain and the famous Copacabana and Ipanema beaches.

Rio de Janeiro is the second largest city of Brazil, after only Sao Paulo, and has a population of approximately 7 million people. Rio de Janeiro is the most visited city in South America The 2016 Summer Olympics will take place in Rio de Janeiro, which will mark the first time a South American city hosts the event. Rio’s Maracanã Stadium will also host the final match for 2014 FIFA World Cup.

The people that live in Rio is known as Cariocas, they are known to be very relaxed people, they love samba, football and a good cachaca “ sugar-cane-run” on the beach or in a nice pub in the suburb of Rio, also they love to say that “God Created the world in six days and on the seventh day he outdid himself and created Rio.”

Rio sits on the southern shore of a landlocked harbor within the magnificent natural setting of Guanabara Bay. Extending for 20km along an alluvial strip, between an azure sea and jungle-clad mountains, the city’s streets and buildings have been molded around the foothills of the mountain range that provides its backdrop, while out in the bay there are innumerable rock islands fringed with white sand. Flanked by gorgeous mountains, white-sand beaches and verdant rainforests fronting the deep blue sea, Rio occupies one of the most spectacular settings of any city in the world Rio stretches between beach and mountain no wonder it has been nicknamed the “Marvelous City.”
